This book was assigned Book Club reading. I found it to be an easy read, capturing my attention from the beginning with a back-and-forth story of two women and their struggles, in the harsh Texas climate, under the oppression of men. However, the author lost me when she took a seemingly authentic tale of woe and gave it a fairy tale ending. The story deserves four stars but the Danielle Steele-ish ending cost the author one star.

River of the Arms of God edition by Irene Sandell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Thought it'd be best to clear that up since the book title might mislead someone into thinking it was either or both. Two abused women, separated by time, find the courage to escape their captors. They're linked by Pantera, the ranch land along the Brazos River, and a journal.
Good read; perfect ending.
This is beautifully written book of two women with great courage. Ms. Sandell proves again that she knows her Texas history and can convey that in an engrossing story.
River of the Arms of God is a story of two women held against their will in the harsh Texas frontier. Sarah is held by Eli along the Butterfield Stage Line in the mid 1800s, and a hundred years later Kate is the emotional prisoner of a rancher in those same Texas plains.
How the women find their way out of their 'prisons' is a testament to their resourcefulness and courage.
Irene Sandell skillfully weaves the parallel lives of two women, one hundred years apart, in this story set against the backdrop of small town West Texas. While one woman is imprisoned against her will and the other is in the gilded cage of a luxurious ranch, the similarities between the two are evident. Yet Sandell never makes the analogies so obvious that the reader ever loses interest in either story. And the theme of imprisonment stretches beyond the women, for even their captors are held in the grasp of their own desires and greed.
This is a richly rendered story with vivid characterization that keeps the pages turning. I found it hard to put down and, at the end, yearned for ‘just that little bit more.’
I was skeptical. I don't usually enjoy books that my patients recommend. Especially when they say, "My wife (or some other family member/friend) wrote it." But this book was actually very good!!! Some people may not enjoy the fairy tale endings but I don't think the author had "fairy tale" in mind. I think she was trying to write about women who overcame extremely difficult situations and became successful. It's a success story, not a fairy tale and it's well worth the read!!!
Loved Sandell's first book and this one even better. She is a great story teller and knows her Texas history. I think this makes her novels better, makes it more "authentic". Loved this story and I want her to hurry up with the sequel and more on Kate's daughter Sarah.

River of the Arms of God is a delightful book with an unusual twist-- plots from two different time periods intertwined. As a native Texan, I am fascinated with the Brazos River.
This is a book that totally grabbed my attention and made me want to find out what happened to the characters. Even after completing the book I wondered about the characters and the twists and turns in the story. The author did a wonderful job bringing all the story lines together.
